College Student Resume: Project Example
Read a complete fictional college student resume built around coursework and a class project, with practical notes for choosing relevant evidence.
A college student resume can give recent coursework and one well-described project more space than an unrelated job. Name the project, your part in the work and the tools you used. Keep any paid or volunteer roles clearly labelled. CareerOneStop advises placing recent, relevant education before work experience when it better supports the goal.1
Read a complete project-led resume
The following resume is fictional. Jordan Reed, Cedar Valley College and the named campus groups are invented. Jordan is applying for a research assistant role that involves finding reliable information, organizing material and writing short summaries. The example deliberately gives the class project more room than a part-time job because that project is closer to the target work.
The project is not disguised as employment. Education has an expected completion date, and the campus service role has its own label. CareerOneStop notes that current students can include a small selection of courses or research projects when they are especially relevant.1
Use the arrangement if it suits your target role. Do not copy Jordan's fictional degree, project, employer or dates.

Select coursework with a reason
Relevant coursework should answer a question raised by the posting. For Jordan's research role, methods and statistics signal useful preparation. A course title alone cannot prove mastery, so the project bullets show the work those classes led to. If a posting calls for a skill you have not used, leave it off and look for another accurate connection.
CareerOneStop suggests limiting special courses or projects to a small relevant selection rather than a long activity inventory.1 Write the course name as your college lists it. If you have not completed a class yet, do not describe its future assignment as finished work. A capstone, lab report or seminar presentation can replace Jordan's directory when it is both yours to discuss and pertinent to the vacancy.
- Mark the tasks and tools in the role description.
- Pick the course or project that produced a comparable piece of work.
- Write a bullet about your contribution and keep the source material or project notes for an interview.
Describe the project without inflating it
Treat a class project as evidence of doing a task in a class setting. Jordan compared public pages, organized a spreadsheet and wrote an introduction. The resume does not call the directory a published research study or claim that an agency adopted it. An interviewer could ask what Jordan checked and how disagreements in the group were resolved.
For a team project, separate your part from the team's output. A line such as 'Wrote the methods section for a group report' is clearer than 'Led research' if you did not lead it. Save a copy or summary of the work only when sharing it is allowed. Remove private participant details from any work sample. CareerOneStop allows relevant work products as optional evidence, but their relevance to the role is the deciding factor.2
Make a version for each role
A lab assistant, communications assistant and customer-service vacancy ask for different proof. Keep a master list of your real projects and tasks, then select the entries that answer the current posting. For a communications role, Jordan would need a genuine writing example. For a lab role, the directory may be less useful than a real lab assignment. Do not turn a course title into a technical skill you cannot demonstrate.
Check that expected graduation, current enrollment, job dates and project dates agree across the resume and application form. If your college has a careers service, ask for feedback on how a reader in your field would interpret the project. CareerOneStop says the education section can move according to career stage and the strength of work experience, so the order is a choice, not a fixed rule.1
- Keep the posting beside your draft and highlight the bullets that answer it.
- Check every software or research-method claim against work you can explain.
- Remove an honor, GPA or course that is irrelevant or inaccurate.
Create your own college resume
Use Jordan's example as a decision guide, then start with your own record. Add a real degree and expected completion date. Give one relevant project a title, course or setting, date and a few honest task bullets. Add paid and volunteer roles under labels that show what they were. The completed document should still make sense to someone who has never seen your course syllabus.
If your main obstacle is identifying any experience at all, the first-resume guide starts there. This page assumes you already have class work and asks which piece deserves space for a specific application. In ApplyBrio, review the final resume yourself before submitting it to an employer.
